The Bolshoi Opera’s thrilling interpretation of Musorgsky’s masterpiece Boris Godunov,in Rimsky-Korsakov’s version, is one of the most celebrated productions in the world.

Dramatically, this most famous of all Russian operas has few equals, dominated by the towering figure of Boris, one of the great bass roles in the operatic repertoire.

Having been accused of murdering the true heir to the throne, Boris becomes Tsar amidst social and political turmoil. Tormented by his guilty conscience, he is driven to despair, madness and death. Musorgsky’s magnificent score is infused with Russian folk music and stirring national hymns.

‘A KNOCKOUT……Everyone should see a Boris like this once in their lives.’
Financial Times

‘…Musorgsky’s epic was simply overwhelming… the sound of the chorus simply shattering… Vladimir Matorin’s Boris founded on his magnificent bass… was a figure of inwardness and dignity and profoundly moving … Lay siege to the box office…’

‘A Godunov that’s simply divine. I was lost in operatic heaven…
opera that speaks straight to the soul and the solar plexus…
The result is simply thrilling… irresistible power and passion.
The magnificent chorus brought a lump to my throat.
They just don’t make them like that anymore.’
