Symphony in C

14, 15 August at 7.30pm

A wonderfully varied and entertaining evening that showcases the Bolshoi’s mastery of three sensational modern ballets.

Opening the programme is Alexei Ratmansky’s Go for Broke, hailed by critics as an ‘artistic triumph’ at its recent premiere in Moscow. Set to Stravinsky’s jazzy and vivacious ballet score Jeu de cartes, the ballet is a colourful miscellany of classically inspired dance.

Roland Petit’s theatrical Pique Dame, based on Pushkin’s dark mystery of love, compulsion and death, was created especially for Bolshoi stars Nikolai Tsiskaridze and Ilza Liepa.

The final masterpiece in this exhilarating evening is a setting of Bizet’s youthfully effervescent Symphony in C in which the great George Balanchine achieved a brilliant symbiosis of dance and music.
