Shostakovich Centenary Celebration
10, 11 August at 7.30pm
The Bolshoi Ballet celebrates the centenary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s birth with The Bright Stream. Banned by Stalin, Fyodor Lopukhov’s original 1935 production was never again staged. Alexei Ratmansky has created a dazzling imaginative new production of this tender comedy of life and love set to Shostakovich’s witty, colourful score which provides the canvas for a joyously rustic homage to the Russian people. This irrepressibly mischievous tale of flirtatious husbands who receive their just deserts combines acrobatics, disguise and farce, in a kaleidoscopic whirl of sparkling virtuosity.
